Installing on a machine with no internet

Totsum can work on a computer with no network connection. The installer normally downloads the AI model once. You can do that download from another computer instead, so that the offline machine never has to go online.

Totsum’s answers are produced by an AI model that runs on your own machine. You can think of it as the app’s engine. It comes as a separate large file (about 7 GB). On a normal install, the installer downloads it for you during setup. On a machine with no internet, you provide that file yourself, and the easy way is to copy it from a computer that does have internet.

You don’t need to download the model file by hand. Copy it from a normal install, put it on the offline machine before installing there, and setup will skip the download.

Totsum’s model folder is the same on both machines:

  • Windows: %USERPROFILE%\.totsum\models\
  • macOS: ~/.totsum/models/
  1. On a computer with internet, install Totsum. The installer downloads the model into the folder above during setup.
  2. Copy everything in that folder onto a USB drive (or a shared drive).
  3. On the offline machine, put the model in place first. Create the same folder, at the path above, and copy the files into it.
  4. Now install Totsum on the offline machine. Setup finds the model already there and skips the download.
  5. Open Totsum. It is ready to use.

That’s it. The machine can stay disconnected.

License keys are verified on your device by signature. There is no account, and activation works on a computer with no network connection. Paste the key in Help → License…. See Licensing for the key itself.

From here, use the app normally. Everything in this documentation applies the same way on a machine with no network connection.
